On Study Of Christianity And Chinese Medical Culture In The Ming And Qing Dynasties

The friction, identity and the integration of two different cultures are a difficult and tortuous process. There exist compatibility and incompatibility in different cultural circles and different cultures. In general, the compatibility of the scientific culture among the different cultural circles (including the medical culture) is greater than the incompatibility, so it would be relatively simple to communicate and exchange. Thus, both the Catholic missionaries in the late Ming and early Qing and Protestant missionaries in the 19th century took medicine as one of important means to expand the mission of space when they face the deep-rooted traditional culture. Meanwhile the collision and the fusion were brought China.While the missionaries were involved in the exchange of Chinese and Western medical culture and communication,the way and the impact are completely different. The paper,on the base of the collision of two different cultures, discuss the competition,debug and impact of medical culture between Christian missionaries and Chinese traditional culture.In Chapter One, this article discusses the dissemination of Christianity in China and its medical activities. The medical missionary activities are mostly individual acts in the late Ming and early Qing,while after the Opium War, Christian medical business developed rapidly.Chapter Two focused on meet between Christianity and chinese local religious culture in the late Ming and early Qing.In China and the West,there are the view of devil disease, people add all kinds of mysterious factors to interpretate the disease, which involve possibility for religious. The Catholic interpreted the devil to cause trouble exaggerating the magical effect of Statue of Christ, crosses, holy water in driving out the devil and removing disease, which competed with local religious culture in the private medical field.In Chapter Three, this article discusses the effect of modern Western medical culture which Christianity spread since the 19th century to the modernization of traditional Chinese medical system.Different from the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, during this period, the spread of Christianity by the medical culture, mainly refers to the art of modern Western medicine, including modern Western technology in implements aspects of Western culture,Western culture behind the institutional level and Western spirit civilization and ethics reflected by Western medicine. Objectively, the west medical technology, the hospital system and medical deucaton system taken into China provided a template and a model, to a certain extent, improving medical and health conditions of China's backwardness, and triggered the profound ethical and change in the system of Chinese society.Conclusion:Christian missionaries took medical" as a means and take "teaching"as the purpose, but eventually medicine was accepted by Chinese society.Western medicine came to China, missionaries played an important bridging role,which promoting the modernization of Chinese medicine early. After the 20th century, with the deepening of China's modernization process, the missionaries perform the function of proclaiming the gospel,while Chinese medical students and local culture physicians began to assume more responsibility for life-saving, the modernization of Chinese medicine began to enter a new period of development.
