The metaphor is the most common language phenomenon. It has long history. The earliest study can be traced back to the era of ancient Greece and Rome 2000 years ago. However, the human being has never stopped research on metaphor, it was a pity that former research had been limited in the language rhetoric function. Lakoff and Johnson have published a book named"Metaphors We Live by"in 1980, which proposed that metaphor was a cognitive tool for people to know the world. This book opened the new direction for the metaphor research, stimulated the research enthusiasm of domestic and foreign scholar's. Therefore, metaphor research has always been a hot topic in the cognitive linguistics. Through reviewing the history of Western metaphor research, this dissertation gives a full detailed description of"the comparison view","the substitution view","the interactive view","the mapping view"and"the conceptual blending theory", we found that the process of western metaphor research is deepening and advancing all the time. It is a process that we could surpass our predecessors'previous research. The domestic research starts late, although the development speed is so fast, it has not formed a system as a whole. Therefore, this dissertation researches on the disadvantages of cognitive model in CBT, and then propose the revised model which analyses the cognitive mechanism of metaphor. The purpose of the dissertation is to provide cognitive motivation for encoding and decoding of every aspects of language. The conceptual blending theory is the cornerstone of this research.
