English is one of the most important of the world's languages. Therefore, it is crucial for international communication. Other languages have borrowed English because the people of those languages can communicate more easily with each other. At present, China has modernized and welcomed more development and trade with other countries more than ever before. Chinese has borrowed many English words. There are a lot of new words in Chinese; thus, there should be a study of these words. This would be useful for students studying Chinese, especially the foreign language and English loanwords in Chinese. The research objective is to study English loanwords in Chinese, the problems Thai students have when using the English loanwords and Chinese teachers teaching methods. The research finds that there are seven methods of borrowing English words in Chinese: 1) the transliteration of English loanwords using Chinese characters; 2) using a combination of English words that have been translated using existing Chinese words and English words that have been transliterated using Chinese characters; 3) using a combination of English words that have been transliterated using Chinese characters and an existing Chinese prefix or suffix that classifies the transliteration; 4) using existing Chinese words that have a similar sound to the English loanwords, and that also have a positive meaning in Chinese that reflects the meaning of the English loanwords in some way; 5) literally translating English loanwords using existing Chinese words to create a new concept in Chinese that keeps the meaning of the English loanword; 6) using English words and letters written using the English alphabet and an existing Chinese prefix or suffix that classifies the English loanword; 7) using English abbreviations as they appear in English. The research sample includes thirty fourth year Chinese major students of the 2011 academic year at three universities in Northeast of Thailand: Faculty of Huamanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University, Faculty of Huamanities and Social Sciences, Mahasarakham University and Faculty of Liberal Arts, Ubon Ratchathani University. However, according to the research, most do not understand loanwords that use method (2) above. Other methods of incorporating English loanwords into Chinese that cause misunderstanding are methods (1), (3), (4) above. Students best understand method (5). These methods cause confusion as to the true meaning of the words. At the same time, the research could possibly be applied to the study of English loanwords in Chinese. |
