With the development of society, there is an increasing tendency of global communication in economy and culture, which requires more talents with high qualities. The requirement on college students learning English has been transferred from mastering the simple language skills to cultivating the students'comprehensive capabilities. In view of the fact that English is a practical linguistic curriculum,"cooperative learning"with group work as its major form has a great effect on the traditional English class learning and improves teaching results by stimulating students'motivation to interact and communicate in English class.As a basic course, it is obviously that English is important in college, but English class is very boring because of the traditional teaching pattern and assessment system, in which learning English in class means listening to the teacher, reciting new words and taking note instead of interacting and communicating with each other.To improve English teaching effect, we apply the theory"cooperative learning"to class to activate the class atmosphere and arouse learners'interest in English. In addition, it can also motivate their communication need and help them obtain some communication skills in interaction. This theory is proved to fulfill their self-worth and increase chance to be successful. Unavoidably, any theory has its advantages and disadvantages. When putting it into practice, teachers are demanded to make groups and assignments with good skills and make sound judgment on learners'performance and evaluate their achievement reasonably in order to make sure that the teaching pattern is working in good condition.Based on college English teaching, this paper is aimed to investigate the appliance of the theory"cooperative learning"in class. The paper starts with the introduction and definition of the theory and proceeds with the chapters of practice in class. And then studies the present problems in English learning and the relevant causes. Combined with the teacher's teaching practice in class, the writer analyzed the teaching strategy ---"cooperative learning". Through the students'feedback as well as the analysis of learning effect on students, the writer concluded the efficiency of"cooperative learning"---its advantages and disadvantages. Based on the above study, the writer finally made a theoretical analysis of"cooperative learning", pointing out the problems and the future direction of applying this theory.
