| Things in the physical world are interconnected and also mutually different. The property of things, as a differentiating criterion between various things, is considered as perceivable and comparable aspects of subjective and objective objects either perceived or known in the process of human being's understanding and transforming the world. It is attached to things and thus can not exist independently. Each cognitive object possesses various aspects of properties, and each property varies under different circumstances. Taking into consideration the significance of understanding the property category, the author selects the property of semantic categories (hereafter PSC) as the research subject of the current thesis. Several scholars have made some achievements on the PSC. Drawing on the thorough research of the previous studies, the current study will give a detailed classification of PSC. Besides, with functional grammar as the theoretical guidance, the thesis will also endeavor to make a systematic description of PSC by adopting theories related to functional semantic field as well as scenario category. This thesis is composed of three parts:Part I Introduction: Literature review of PSC, the purpose and significance of the research, layout of the thesis and research methodology. The second part is the main part of the thesis, which is further divided into four chapters.Chapter I: Theoretical basis of the paper: Functional Grammar.Chapter II: First of all, PSC is classified into animate and non-animate property categories based on the nature of the object described. Animate property category can be further classified into physiological and non-physiological property categories and non-animate property category is divided into sensory and non sensory property categories according to the basic laws of nature and human cognitive process.Chapter III: Based on the classification of PSC in chapter two, this chapter will set the functional semantic field of PSC by adopting the functional semantic field theory and make a general description of it. By breaking the boundary of grammatical categories divisions (morphology and syntax) in traditional grammar, the paper also synthesizes different perspectives of language and differentiates the core and edge of the functional semantic field. Chapter IV: PSC is classified into typical scenario category and atypical scenario category based on theories related to scenario category. The third part is the conclusion. With from meaning to form as the key principle, the current thesis presents a systematic description of PSC by synthesizing semantic property, functional semantic field and scenario category, fulfilling the process from exterior to interior, from thought to language and from language to speech. The description of PSC throughout the paper also proceeds by following the process from the semantic deep structure to the surface structure. |
