Citizenship is owned by citizens . It is the legal rights guaranteed by the government. Citizenship was an important issue in ancient society. It linked the individual and the state. There was a remarkable difference between citizens and foreign citizens. The study of ancient citizenship is valuable and meaningful.Citizens can get judicial protection. Citizens can enjoy the benefits of social and economic life. Citizens can take part in the state administration. In general , Roman citizenship was extended from the beginning to the end, from Latium extended to the whole of Italy, then to the whole empire. Roman citizenship had prominent features, Roman citizenship was closely connected with family, the Romans were open minded about citizenship compared with the other ancient states. Rome had strict citizen-administrative system. Citizenship played a important role in the history of Rome. Citizenship played its role in maintainning the rule of the Rome . Citizenship increased social integration . In this paper, the ancient Roman citizenship be treated as the main object of study, I try to explore the connotation of citizenship, outlined the process of expanding of citizenship , summed up the characteristics of Roman citizenship, and study the functions of roman citizenship.
