The paper intends to track the historical background of Charles Edward Ives's music composition, which involves multicultural factors, such as the national conditions and history of America, the development of art and philosophy, the music trend, cutural foundation of music composition, ect. By this way, the retrospect of these factors makes it possible to explore the distinctive features which is inevitable to be reflected in the music composition of Charles Edward Ives, and the spirit of times and national style which are expressed in his works.Ives's music composition has led to the inestimable influence on not only the American composers followed him, but also the contemporary Chinese composers as well. Thus, it has given rise to the discussion that the relationship between the advanced composing concept and national folk music is whether in the situation of combing or seperating, working as reference or innovation . As far as I'm concerned, Ives's music composition is characterised with advance in its nationalism and internationalism, which might have inspired the America of late 19th and early 20th century , as well as contemporary Chinese composers.
