Alice Walker is a famous African-American woman writer who appeared in the American literary circle in the 1970s. After the Pulitzer Prize novel The Color Purple, By the Light of My Father's Smile published in 1998 was her another masterpiece. This novel, taking the relationship between fathers and daughters as the breakthrough point, expresses the oppression of women in the patriarchal society, especially the double oppression from the racism and sexism of the black women in the inferior position of the society; it also expresses the prejudice and oppression of the ethnic minorities represented by the Mundo race under the influence of the west-centerism.This paper mainly explores the Other's images and their ways to find themselves in By the Light of My Father's Smile on the basis of feminism and Walker's womanism and thus helps the readers to further understand the structure and connotation of the novel. The introduction part introduces the development of African-American women's literature, Alice Walker, her By the Light of My Father's Smile and the present study on the novel By the Light of My Father's Smile at home and abroad and expounds the writing purpose of the paper.
