| The Victorian era is generally agreed to be the great age in British history. The global extension of English power supported its sun-never-set Empire, but working people, poor people and oppressed people had a wretched life. Charles Dickens is one of the excellent writers who wrote numerous works to expose darkness of the society, pitilessly condemning irrational social system in Britain, the exploitation and oppression from the rich to the poor. By comparative analysis of characters'destiny in Oliver Twist & Hard Times, a conclusion is drawn that in Capitalist society the rich live an extravagant life, dominating the society, while the poor, as the appendage of the rich, lead a life, helpless and wretched and can't escape from the poverty gap, no matter how hard they work. The thesis contains six Chapters. In Chapter One, Charles Dickens and his works are briefly introduced one by one, and there is a summation of the current situation of Charles Dickens and his works at home and aboard. The second chapter is an introduction on Oliver Twist & Hard Times, as well as the term "class", of which the definition from the classic Marxist writers is adopted as the theoretic foundation of the thesis. In the third chapter, the analysis of the have-nots (mainly the orphans in cities) in Oliver Twist is made, involving what families they are born, what they experience and what result they have, so that their doomed fate is approved. Furthermore, the rich are also analyzed for the same purpose. Chapter Four is about a detailed analysis of the have-nots (mainly the working class) in Hard Times, involving their inborn poverty, their miserable life and their failure of struggle for a better life, as well as the analysis of the rich, in order to reveal destiny of the poor. Marx's theory of alienation and comparative analysis are adopted in Chapter Five in order that characters in Oliver Twist & Hard Time are comparatively analyzed. By analysis, the conclusion is achieved that the poor are manipulated by their doomed fate and never step over the poverty trap in their life. The last Chapter is the conclusion of the whole thesis and demonstrates the significance of the inextricable destiny in reality. |
