At present ESP study has been a special subject. Nursing English is one branch of ESP. Many scholars have conducted research from different angles, among of which attention is paid more to needs analysis. They analyzed the ways to improve Nursing English teaching quality through interviewing teachers and sponsors, and did investigations. When we study the current situation students'needs is one focus. There are researchers who take up this study which help us broaden our vision.In this thesis we keep a watcheye on the situation of Shanxi nursing English teaching. We will also use interview and questionnaire to find problems and analyze them. The aim of this thesis is to indicate existing problems and find ways to solve them through analyzing investigation and ESP theory, so as to improve running, teaching and learning level.Firstly we discuss the characteristics of this course, including late starting, strong pertinence and practice; graduates can go abroad, work with foreign doctors and nurses and face foreign patients. It is a promising discipline. Secondly we analyze the present situation from faculty, students'needs, teaching materials, methodology and evaluation through interview, questionnaires, informal consultations etc. in order to find its root.Finally we discuss the Nursing English teaching reform. The concept of running and teaching is analyzed. We find there is still gap between learning situation and social needs. Materials choosing should be with international standard. A suitable assessment system should be established. The unique point of this thesis is to guide Shanxi Nursing English teaching with ESP theory. This makes up the research vacancy of the study, changes its unsystematic situation and provides powerful reference.
