George Miller as a founder in the field of cognitive psychology, made great contributions to the theory of cognitive meaning:First, Miller pointed out the semantic relationship among different words, and revealed basic principles in the area,such as the class image,hyponymy,and embodiment;to the next,he integrated the psychology and linguistic elments,so as to distinguish the traditional phlisophical approach,and illustrated how to make larger linguistic units,which mean to definite the syntactic,contextual representation in the semantic relation as the machnism to the word meaning.Overall, Miller used three core concepts:mind, cognition and semantic relation, depicts the inner mechanism for the structuring of the meaning formation and processes, which also builds a systematic meaning mechanism which is based on the huaman cognition and a contextual cognitive model.There are three parts in this essay:The first part briefly discusses Miller,s cognitive psycholinguistic program, introducting how he managed to integrated psychology and linguistic,the next part discusses some essential features,mainly reveals some formal and cognitive features.The last part discusses the contextual paradigm in the lexical semantics,which illustrates the semantic relations in the contextual cognitive model and meanwhile broaden its practical values.
