Compared with"ego cogito ergo sum"or"mind-body dualism",the views of Descartes on the will may sounds much stranger for the researchers and amateurs of Philosophy. And many persons may think that the academic research values of it are very low. However, the conventional views not always be accurate.Through the studying of the books written by Descartes and other materials,I deemed that the views of Descartes on the will are worth to be attached importance to.And the reasons are here:First of all,as a independent mode of thought, the will has constructed"thought"with understanding,And therefore it has been an important part of the basis of Descartes'philosophical thought, in particular his Epistemology.Second,as a function of giving affirm, the will are piaying a crucial role in the processes of giving a judgment. And third, it's the will connects the mind and body when it's in the character of the perception of our desires.During the studying,I found that there were some new directions and levels in Descartes'thinking of the will.In his opinion, our will is infinite and should be free.Different from others, the free here has a new meaning, that's a capability of self—determine.Although we have to reconcile our will with God,it also means that we have a much more real and much more exhaustive free. There is also an innovation in the views of Descartes on the will. It's Descartes that adopt the will into the Epistemology. And in Descartes'philosophical thought, the will is not only an important part of the basis of his epistemology, but also an object to be understanded. And Descartes has investigated and elaborated the will with the methods of"suspicion in common"and"intuition and deduce".It's a new angle helps us to learn will. And many successors have formed their own views on will on the basis of it.In my thesis,I will elaborate three aspects of the views of Descartes on the will. The first one is the definitions of will in Descartes'philosophical thought. The second one is Descartes'thinking of the roles that the will has played in"thought"and the relation between our body and mind. And the third one is the methods that Descartes has used. And during my studying,I will put forward some my own views.
