| Understanding the substance of same-sex affection, that such "affection" can be considered as a kind of power as well as furor, which can impel the individuals to break the boundaries, therefore step into a brand new state of life. Such impulse and process are the keys to analyze Maurice, a novel by British novelist E.M. Forster. In this paper, the basic theories of phenomenology, especially those in Horizon and Epoche, are utilized to help with the analysis. Under the premise of perusing the novel, combining with artistic interpretation of Nietzsche's Dualistic Theory of Artistic Impulse in Apollo and Dionysus, Maurice's way toward love is explained. Why to love, under which condition that the protagonist had accepted the afflictions and trials of love, and how he was able to be vigorously resilient, are all main topics discussed in this paper.Integrating into unbounded state, retrieving pristine power that surges like mighty flood, obtaining metaphysical spiritual comfort under the glory of love, beauty and gospel; these are all concentrated as a wishful hope that Maurice yearns for a happier year. |
