Sherwood Anderson enjoys a special status in the 20th century American literary history. His writings had greatly influenced a large number of modern American writers like Faulkner, Hemingway. He was one of the story-tellers who had influenced the styles and visions of that generation in his age. Winesburg Ohio, Anderson's masterpiece, is regarded as the first modern novel on real significance.Anderson believes that story-tellers are mean to show the real life under the surface. He kept a distance with the appearance of the objective, paid attention to dig deep psychological within characters and formed his unique style. His innovtions took places in his expression, structure and theme of his novel, which is related with his use of irony. The whole novel expressed the grotesques'deformities and beauty, the poetic pursuit and realistic bleak, profoundly revealed theirs pain, loneliness and helpless situation in the American industrialization process.The introduction section will mainly discusses the study which has been done at home and abroad, and points out the research status of the achievements and problems. Their research paid attention to the groups of grotesques and various schools, this paper will mainly focuses on the irony art of Winesburg Ohio.In this papar we will analysis the irony art in three points. Chapter one is about words irony, its performance and meaning; Secondly, irony in the structure arrangement. Finally the parody type irony, discusses Winesburg Ohio and Bible and Sons and Lovers of intertextuality sex, which will do benefits to our understanding of the subject.With the epilogue part of summing up the overall, we will make simple evaluation and points out its in offspring writer influence, combining Anderson's artistic styles and artistic pursuit of Anderson's irony art.
