T'ung Wang is currently one of greatest directors who can make a balance between business and arts. Almost all of his films relate to the history of humanity in Taiwan and focus on destinies of people in the bottom of society. From the point of "consciousness of the underclass", this paper researches T'ung Wang's movies combining with the related theories of underclass, and illustrates how the "consciousness of the underclass" is presented on the connotation theme and film language in T'ung Wang's movies. Besides, this paper further searches for causes and influences of the "consciousness of the underclass" in most of T'ung Wang's movies.This thesis consists of three chapters:preface, main body and epilogue. The preface briefly introduces the background of T'ung Wang, defines the meaning of "consciousness of the underclass", and comes up with researching situations and innovations. The main body can be divided into three sections. The first part mainly analyses the connotation of the "consciousness of the underclass" in T'ung Wang's films. In my view, the "consciousness of the underclass" of T'ung Wang's films briefly presents on his concerning on three aspects of the underclass persons:the predicament of living, the way of living and the results of survive. The second one discusses how to represent the "consciousness of the underclass" in the form of imaging. For my part, the "consciousness of the underclass" in the form of imaging briefly expresses on three points as follows:the scenic of the underclass,shadow and color of the films, the things as the metaphor and the irony of the combine of the voice and picture. The third one researches internal and external causes of the "consciousness of the underclass". In my opinion, the "consciousness of the underclass" of T'ung Wang's films was caused by the influences of local literature movement of Taiwan and the new period film. Besides, it also has a close relationship between the special life experiences of the director, and therefore forms the director's special opinions of the arts. Lastly, the epilogue summarizes this thesis, evaluates the director's achievements on arts, and discusses ideological and artistic values of T'ung Wang's films.
