Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) is the most influential language approach that has been practised a lot and concluded by the foreign language researchers since 1980s. TBLT works by forming a task and the students acquire language by doing things. The tasks about language acquisition are the communicative activities that the learners do to achieve a specific goal. The new English curriculum standard in China recommends TBLT and emphasizes that the lessons should be designed from the students' interests, experiences and cognitional levels. The learning methods of experience, practice, participation, cooperation and communication are proposed. TBLT changes the traditional ways of English teaching and learning, explores the new approach to reform English teaching and learning. TBLT, which is student-centered teaching, is an effective way to improve students' comprehensive abilities. TBLT is widely used in the classroom teaching reform and big success is achieved. Reading is an important part of English learning and improving the students' reading ability is one of the important teaching objectives. However the low reading ability is the serious problem for higher vocational school students. The inadequate input will affect output. In order to improve students' reading ability TBLT is used in English reading teaching. The students improve their reading skills by doing some reading tasks. The reading teaching and learning in higher vocational school is analyzed. The thesis analyzes the connection between TBLT and reading and puts TBLT into practice in higher vocational school in order to improve students' reading ability and further to develop their comprehensive usage of English. TBLT is used to teach English reading and the teaching procedures of pre-task, while-task and post-task are designed. The aim, type, quantity and difficulty of the tasks are researched and accomplishment of the tasks is evaluated objectively. Compared with the change of students' reading ability before and after the experiment, TBLT is efficient to improve higher vocational school students' reading ability.
