| Nicholas ? Vasilievich Gogol is the great standard-bearer of Russian Realistic Literature in the 19th century. By the same amount of praise and critic during his lifetime and after death, he created a colorful world of art with his genius of the pen in his dramatic life. His creation was the re-creation based on drawing of the essence of Realistic Literature, not only with the foundation of realistic literature, but also with the quality of Realistic Literature one of which the grotesque in the novel shows. The devil in all forms, the image of "little people"and landlords, the ghost interlinked and bizarre plot with twists and turns, magical, rare and unfamiliar environment described by Gogol are creating a strong atmosphere of grotesque of fictions . Such obvious characteristics of grotesque in Gogol's works was heavily related to the Orthodox Church and the influence of Russian folk literature in his childhood, the combination of himself with the insight into the evil character and extreme personality. The grotesque constructed by Gogol painstakingly offers us a microscope to observe the world so that all the vulgar and ugly of the real world can be exposed clearly and mercilessly. With the microscope, we also found the three causes resulting in these pathosis: autocratic cultural tradition causing the distorted and engulfed pathosis, the modern civilization impacting the human soul ,the wandering handicaps of humanity itself .At the same time, a lot of weird factors merged into Gogol's Realistic Literature, not only making two contradictory thinking ways of logic and non-logical to blend perfectly in the works thus resulting an aesthetic characteristic of the virtual and real world, but also introducing the "ugly"and"vulgar " to Russian literature known to the nobleness breaking the myth of romantism. This innovative way of expression and selection of breakthrough started a new road to the development of Realistic Literature and causing Gogol's novels to coincide with the Modernist Novel in some ways. |
