Wang Ziwu specialized in ink figure painting during his time in university. Famous for his realistic painting style coupled with the vivid and impressive figures he had drew, Wang became very popular among the painting circles in the early 80s of 20the century by right of a set of ink figure painting works. Since his had passed his mid age, he began to place special emphasis on the masterpieces of Zhu Da, Zhu Huairen, Qi Baishi and Hu Binhong, and gradually formed a style both meticulous and unrestrained, never confined to the conventional modes with unique painting techniques. Provided that Xu Beihong and Jiang Zhaohe is regarded as the first generation figure painting masters, while Huang Zhou, Yang Zhiguang and Fang Zengxian the second, Wang Ziwu deserves to be one of the third generation in the new era.Wang Ziwu Stood out as an innovative painter who upheld classic but never dedicated himself to it exclusively, bringing fresh blood to the world of Chinese drawers. Till now, few studies have been done about the paintings of Wang Ziwu in the academia. All we can look up into about him are some general introductory words and sporadic essays released by newspapers, neither of which is a deep and systematic research that parallels with Wang's artistic achievements. This study now focuses on the style and features of his works. By speculating all his life, this study also tries to search for the historical reasons of his style, deliberate the realistic cultural significance his works reflect as well as the role they play in the advancing progress of contemporary Chinese paintings.This article exams Wang's course of growth and experiences in art activities to sort up his career path to be a painter. To work out the historical value of Wang Ziwu's works, the spirit of Chinese paintings in the works should be analysed. Then, he should be placed together with other artists of his age for comparison, so that the unique artistic languages of the drawer himself could be revealed. It is from this multi-angle and three-dimensional perspective that could we portray a full artist and his abundant world of arts.
