| Language generates, exists, and develops in order to meet the need of social communication. In English-speaking countries, females" language always demonstrates its distinguished characteristics from the communication process between men and women.This thesis is worked out based on previous research and pre-existing theories, Gossip Girl is adapted according to the American writer Cecily's best-selling novel, which is also the popular TV play in the entire world. The lines in this series reveal life of the youth in American, the female language features of it is obvious, before this there was no research on its female language features, and this thesis takes lines of Gossip Girl as research object and analyzes the female language features in it. The thesis studies and analyzes the female language features in Gossip Girl through combining sociolinguistic and pragmatic theories. Through studies of female language feature in Gossip Girl, it can be concluded that from the aspect of sociolinguistics women consciously tend to use low pitch in certain social environment, they also tend to use rising tone and more standard pronunciation when they are communicating with others; In vocabulary, women are prone to use intensifiers, hedges and tag questions to show their politeness. From the aspect of pragmatic analysis, the author concludes that women are used to keeping positive attitude to make the conversation going on smoothly, so they tend to observe cooperative principle and polite principle, at the same time, women also save other's face and dignity.The research of this thesis can help people further understand western culture, female language characteristics and the youths' conversational strategies in western countries. It's also beneficial for female to promote communication, lessen misunderstanding and maintain harmonious interpersonal relationship. At the same time, this study is also an effective way to contribute to the intercultural communication. |
