Chinese ancient maritime literature is an important branch and also an important part of the Chinese ancient literature. Chinese ancient maritime novels appeared from the maritime narrative elements of the "Shanhai Novel". Chinese ancient maritime novels gradually revealed its characteristics with the development of the novels. Chinese ancient novels reached its peak at Ming and Qing periods, so is the Chinese ancient maritime novels, no matter from the aspects of narrative framework, narrative type, or narrative language. Now it has its unique narrative characteristics. Only a few scholars paid attention to this area and there is no systematic research relating to the characteristics of the maritime novels of Ming and Qing periods. This dissertation will mainly employ the comparative method and will be divided in to five parts. The first part is an overall view. It includes maritime novels'definition and development. The second part compares the narrative theme and type of the"Shanhai Novel"and the maritime novels of Ming and Qing, thus figure out its characteristics from the source. The third part discusses the differences of maritime novels of the West and the Ming and Qing period, thus reveals their social backgrounds. The fourth part is a summary of the narrative characteristics. The last part is a conclusion of this dissertation. This dessertation at last concludes that there are five characteristics of the maritime novels of Ming and Qing. The first is that it is based on linear narrative; the second is that it is hereditable, exotic and creative; the third is that it is fictional; the fourth is that it focuses on coincidence; the last is that it is sermonic. These characteristics have broad backgrounds which are the contemporary environment, the development of the society and the genre itself and also the efforts of the novelists. Due to these narration characteristic, the maritime novels of Ming and Qing could form a unique style. |
