As one of the unearthed burial articles in Sui and Tang dynasties, the Tomb-Guard Beast in the capital cities Chang An and Luo Yang shows vivid characteristics of phases from the vertical axis of time, as well as a high degree of regional features from the horizontal scale of region. Based on these characteristics, the morphological characteristics of Tomb-Guard Beast are often took as one of the important bases for the identification of burial objects which are not recorded by specific time. The study of the Tomb-Guard Beast appearing in Sui and Tang Danasties is of significance to the archaeology.Based on the chronologically recorded tombs and the tombs which are not chronologically recorded, by employing the methods of archaeological typology, this thesis is intended to catalog the unearthed Tomb-Guard Beast appearing in the capital cities, Chang An an and Luo Yang, in Sui amd Tang Danasties and to classify the periods of them, to establish the periodical norm for different regions and to summarize the characteristics of Tomb-Guard Beast in each period. Further, the thesis aims to establish the evolutional sequence of Tomb-Guard Beast in separative regions, and to compare the common characteristics and differences of Tomb-Guard Beast in separative regions.The Tomb-Guard Beast with the faces of humans as well as animals appeared firstly in the Northern Dynasties. Based on them, the Tomb-Guard Beast in the capital cities of Sui and Tang Dynasties developed and became prosperious. With the archaelogical discoveries, the thesis aims to give a simple analysis of the sources of the zhenmushou with the faces of humans and animals in Chang an and Luo Yang.In the end, the thesis aims to do a textual research on the naming of Tomb-Guard Beast with the faces of humans and animals with the aid of historical documents, moreover, to interpret the appearance as well as the essence of the Tomb-Guard Beast and to analyze the relationships between the Tomb-Guard Beast appearing in capitial cities and those which are not unearthed in the capital cities.
