As modern technologies develop incredibly fast, they bring about dramatic changes in people's daily life. The development of modern transportation and communication has enabled people all over the world to get in touch with each other regardless of their different cultural backgrounds. The digital communities formed by the internet has connected people from every corner of the globe together and the information transmitted in intercultural communication has transcended the physical constraints, broken down the barriers of time and space and flown freely all over the world. It is hoped by all to be a paradise characterized by globalization, interrelation, equalization, share of information, and variety of linguistic symbols. From the perspective of intercultural communication, the author of this thesis discussed and analyzed different types and characteristics of computer mediated intercultural communication (CMICC), and proposed several suggestions to help internet users better understand and participate in CMICC, reduce misunderstandings and realize effective CMICC. So far, few studies about computer mediated communication (CMC) have been carried out specifically from the perspective of intercultural communication. This thesis firstly discussed the status quo of global internet development and of CMICC, then introduced different types of CMC, mainly the application of the internet such as E-mil, Bulletin Board System, Blog and Fackbook, etc. and the salient features of CMICC, finally the author studied different barriers exist in CMICC and proposed suggestions to develop intercultural communication competence and introduced the concept of Netiquette.Analyzing CMC from the perspective of intercultural communication can promote online communication among different cultures. The development of internet information technology has provided great convenience for language study especially for English learners in China, this undoubtedly promotes intercultural communication. Meanwhile, barriers to intercultural communication may also appear. The English language and the culture it stands for dominates the Internet intercultural communication. The mass-rally and emotionalizing characteristics of the cyber culture help promote ultra-nationalism. It is urgent for people of different cultures to face the challenges by sorting out the advantages of computer-mediated communication with a view to facilitate cooperation from a global perspective. So long as positive attitudes and measures are taken, CMICC will deepen understanding among countries and promote more cooperation in the fields of economy, education and technology etc. for mutual advances.Intercultural communication on the internet has emerged as a new dimension for intercultural communication. This paper argues that, in order to adapt to this new kind of communication, it is of vital significance to understand basic knowledge of the field and be aware of its positive and negative aspects. The discussion of this thesis is tentative since the study of CMC is still very much in a burgeoning domain and study on intercultural cultural communication itself is an interdisciplinary endeavor. A blend of these two academic domains promises a fertile field for much further researches. This dissertation contributes to the researches in the still rudimentary field of CMC in cross-cultural communication. The author of the research hopes to bring readers meaningful inspiration and appeal to further study.
