Between The Sacred And The Secular: The Study On Cheeloo University Rural Reconstruction

In the Rural Reconstruction Movement of the Republican Period, Christianity was an important power which was once Rural Reonstruction pioneer. Furthermore, the Christian Rural Reconstruction had made outstanding contributions in agricultural scientific research, education and training and other aspects. The Christian Rural Reconstruction Movement is essentially a theory of Social Gospel as a practice, also represented a new mission concept, which the ultimate aim is to "build a Christian Rural Community".In late Qing Dynasty and the Republican period, Cheeloo University was a famous Christian University; there had been "South Cheeloo and North Yenching" praise. Since 1864, American missionary C. W. Mateer founded a Primary School in Tengchow, Cheeloo University had gradually from missionary education of primary school level into a Christian University with modern educational function. In this time, Cheeloo University had undergone three signature phases:Tengchow College, Shantung United College and the registration stage. The goals of Cheeloo was also from "created the Chinese Christian Leaders" to the propose for "meet the needs of the society", While Cheeloo still maintained the inherent religious character.The Rural Reconstruction as well as the health, education missionary, was a different way of preaching with the changing times. In fact, these activities have included both sacred and secular pursuits. Cheeloo returned secular education from missionary education which reflected the adjustment between the secular societies in China Christian in essence. Meanwhile, The Christian Social Gospel provided the basis of open theology for these secular activities. Therefore, Cheeloo participated in Rural Reconstruction, not only impact from the Christian Social Gospel, and also the result of the mutual adjustment between Christian and the secular society.The research in academic about Rural Reconstruction to has focused on the representative personages of the secular Rural Reconstruction, Liang Shu Ming and Yan Yang Chu. In contrast, the research of Christian Rural Reconstruction areas was much weaker, especially about the Christian University. Now, in this paper, Cheeloo's rural program is research object. Firstly, the paper describes the Cheeloo University and its rural program process in order to discuss the characteristic of Cheeloo and its Rural Reconstruction from Christian and Chinese society interaction. And, the study will analyze the differences from Christian University to Secular and Church in Rural Reconstruction area. In short, the purpose of this thesis is to search for the Rural Reconstruction activities of Cheeloo what universal significance will give to the study of China Christian University and Christian Rural Reconstruction Movement in China in modern times.
