Tolerant And All-embracing: The Image Of Chongqing City In Movies

A favorable image of a city can reflect the spirit of the city and increase the citizen's cohesion inside the city. Outside the city, the good image can absorb more resources in investments, talents and visitors through deepening their impression of the city. So building a favorable city image is an important issue which was too valuable to be neglected of city construction. There are several ways to build a favorable city image, movie is one of the most important channels because of its characters: the vivid scenes, the appealing stories and the powerful impact. In China, Shanghai and Hong Kong are the two most successful cities which had built favorable city image through movies. The legends of Shanghai and Hong Kong in the movies are so glorious and impressive.After being a municipality, the Committee of Chinese Communist Party and the government of Chongqing city paid more and more attention on the building of the image of the city. They made lots of efforts and achieved remarkable results from the city's outlook to the city's inner spirit. In pace with the social and economic development of Chongqing city, more and more directors choose Chongqing to be the film location. According to the films which were located in Chongqing in the past years, we can find some characters and regular patterns of the image of Chongqing city. Looking forward to the future, Chongqing can play a great role in the movie industry.The study objects of this thesis are the movies which were shoot in Chongqing and could reflect the image of Chongqing in the past 60 years. The writer tries to find out the changes of the image of Chongqing city in the movies via looking for the tracks of the development of the Chongqing movies in the past 60 years. It can be separated into fours periods: the support capital period, 1950s to 1970s, 1980s to 2000s and from 2002 till now. From the developing tracks, the writer can find out the character of Chongqing's image in movies——tolerant and all–embracing. The specific expression of the character is the coexistence of tradition and modern, city and countryside, vigorous and gentle, taste and decency. At last, the writer promotes some suggestions to improve the image of Chongqing city in movies. Firstly, the rich resources of the nature, the history and the culture, the policies, the development of society and economic and the news happened in Chongqing should be made full use to be the materials of Chongqing movies. Secondly, Chongqing movies should cover the disadvantages and advocate the advantages of the city image. In addition, the character of tolerant and all-embracing should be expressed incisively and vividly. There are lots of research results about how to improve the image of Chongqing city. However, the researches on the image of Chongqing city in movies are few. So the writer wish to contribute strength of her own for the construction of the image of Chongqing city by researching on a new viewpoint——movies!...
