In terms of timing, the history of the Great Wall developed since the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States period-from the seventh century B.C. till the third century B.C., for about 400 hundred years. Particularly from 360 BC to 300 BC, this was the climax period of the construction of the Great Wall. The climax period of the construction of the Great Wall and the wartime period happened alternately, in addition, the contribution for the Great Wall during the Spring and Autumn period, far exceed the Warring States period. Looking back at those days, the first sections of the construction of the Great Wall by the vassal states and the Warring States period originated from the Chu State and Qi State, which were part of the neighboring areas of Southern and Eastern parts of China, and as days go by, it has gradually extended to Chinese heartland and Northern part. In sum, the Great Wall was initially developed from the Southeast to later to the Northwest. In addition, during the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States period, the Great Wall was built on rugged terrain such as, near the mountainous regions or by the rivers and even along the borders of different vassal states. Due the latter, several wars broke out frequently where the Great Wall passes through and usually along rivers. The primary purpose of the construction of the Great Wall was military defence.
