Haydn D-major cello concerto has played a significant role in the classic music world, for its abundant virtuosities and beautiful melodies. It is too important to be ignored by any self-respecting cellist. This is especially true of the first movement. When one takes an audition for an orchestra, the first movement is like a key to the door. The first movement has a number of excellent uses of techniques, high-lying passages and special effects, such as the flute-like one before the cadenza in the first movement. Partly because of this, Haydn is recognized as the most famous cello concerto of the late eighteenth century. In this discussion, I would like to talk about the virtuosity in the first movement of D-major cello concerto. As a word with evolving meanings,'virtuosity'refers to different things at different time. This concerto makes greatest demand on the virtuoso. Maybe that is also one of the reasons why people view this master piece as Kraft's work before 1953. In that year, a librarian rediscovered Haydn's dated autograph score.Apart from that, about the Cadenza in the first movement, virtuosos had the most creative composition, trying to raise the virtuosity to the highest point.
