| George Crumb (1929—) is the peer leader among American composers in 20th century, and he is equivalent to Miltor Babbitt, Elliott Carter, John Cage, being American most representative composer after The Second War. Due to the impact from his family, George Crumb started composing music from early childhood, study and imitation of classical music in his early works makes his later writing full of classical style. George Crumb's music is ever-changing and colorful. His music has unique structure and the work often have the most extensive and most imaginative timber. In all non-electronic music composers, his use of timber is the most peculiar and gorgeous so as to be studied and discussed by theorists and scholars. As long as they come to research on the twentieth century new timber, they can not help but study and discuss Crumb's music as example. He provides more practice methods for the organization's technology with a variety of perspectives and variety of possibilities offered by his innovative method of composition.This article attempts to make analysis and research on pitch organization and its role in depth in the chamber music work<Quest> composed by George Crumb in 90s,20th century. As a study case, based on in-depth observation of the specific pitch organization, the paper also sought to discover their role in a variety of music:the theme, extension, structure and so on. Although this is a piece of a jigsaw, but for this work focused on the importance of reflection of Crumb's pitch organization technology and subtle effect of classical music style on him, thus, research on this work can also help us to further care technology and style composition of Crumb's other works. It is worth mentioning that, due to the distinctive highlights " timber-sonority " and " timber-texture" in Crumb's works, and also because the pitch organization is never isolated from other elements of music, therefore, in observation of the pitch organization, they have also been associated appropriately with other music elements such as rhythm, texture, structure, etc. at the same time. We hope to understand and grasp technical characteristics and style of George Crumb and this is not only a research method but also an essential part pitch organization of the study.This paper was composed of three chapters. The first chapter made summary and induction of pitch set and music types principally used in<Quest>, and on the basis we try to discuss the 'traditional'elements in the work. The second chapter was set mainly the concept of the core pitch set, focused on association of the set and harmony mentioned in the first chapter and discussed their structural force within and between movements. In the third chapter, the main research was the association of content of set discussed in the first two chapters with other structural elements such as texture, structure and associated structures. Thus we will have a comprehensive understanding of Crumb's pitch organizations.Conclusion mainly packed up and summed up the character of the pitch materials in<Quest> which discussed in this paper. |
