Chinese writers always like thinking about time. As an existence of life, time is a manifestation of heartfelt feeling. However, time consciousness is an expression of time consciousness when individuals pursue immortality or try to transcend life and death because of life is limited.Yan Zhen is very sensitive about time, and he has integrated his sense of time and his pursuit of time into his novel creation. When the author was reading his three novels, Used to be at The Ends of Earth, The Wavy Water, Because They Are Women, it was not difficult to find that the time consciousness and aesthetic expressions should be the key characters or important features of his novels. This article is to study on the time consciousness of his novels, and will elaborate them by analyzing the writer's motive of novel creation, intellectuals' perception of life, the aesthetic implications of his novels and the cause of their formation. First of all, this article summarizes all studies on Yan Zhen's novels, and the author reveals the expression of time consciousness in Yan Zhen's novels by giving a definition of time and time consciousness. Then this article analyzes the intellectuals' perception of life embodied in time consciousness in his novels under the contrast between life finiteness and space-time unlimitedness. The discussion on how the time consciousness affects the implication presenting in Yan Zhen's novels. At last, this article explains the cause of formation of the writer's time consciousness from following aspects:the traditional culture's influence on individuals, the modern culture's effect on individuals, and their pursuit.
