The Possibility Of The Application Of CD And ICM In The Chinese Translation Of Lyrical English Poetry

The poets of Lyrical Ballads take the subject of rural life, simple language, true emotions and fresh style to lead to a new direction for Romantic English Poetry. The particular charm of the poems are popular with Chinese readers and make the translation task of Lyrical Ballads become more important.Cognitive Linguistics proposed in the 1970s provides a new perspective for the research of language. Cognitive Semantics has the main opinions: experience view, conceptual view, image-schema view, cognitive model view and activation view and so on. This theory is complete with powerful life for studying the relationship among human language, embodiment thinking, and the physical world. It is based on embodiment philosophy and argues that the linguistic research should be extended beyond the language, such as: cognitive structure of language-users, structure of social encyclopedia, and conceptual construal in dynamic contexts, etc. Obviously, the subjective status of poets, translators, and readers can not be ignored.George Lakoff, the pioneer in the Cognitive Linguistics, proposed that the core of the book Women, Fire and Dangerous Things was Idealized Cognitive Models(ICM as following). Language usage is constructed on basis of ICM. The grounding for the cognition and conceptual structure of language users is humans'physical embodiment. The meaning can be delivered only when the expressive forms interact with humans'cognitive structures, and can be extended by the humans'imaginative and creative competence. Consequently, the nodes on the network can be activated and linked, then the knowledgeable network can be built up. The mental coherence between the poets and readers is bridged with the help of encyclopedic ICM.The main research questions contained in this thesis are: firstly, the background and models of ICM & CD cognitive theory ; secondly, the explaining power of ICM & CD theory in Chinese translation versions of lyrical English poetry. Thirdly, the cognitive and theoretical foundation supporting the metaphors, metonymies, image-schemas in translation. The cultural differences do not prevent human from sharing the similar and common living experiences. Therefore, the cognitive analysis with ICM & CD will be applied in Chinese translation of Lyrical English poetry, exploring how the translator analyses ICM & CMs in the source CD. The connotation and implication in the poetic contextual CD can be reached by activating CMs in a ICM. The contextual concepts and emotions become available for Chinese readers. The proper translation methods can be found to make the Chinese translation of lyrical English poetry more reasonable.The thesis puts forward a completely novel and scientific method for Chinese translation of Lyrical English Poetry on cognitive linguistics view. This is the significance and innovation of the thesis.
