With the development of foreign language learning and teaching, researchers have increasingly realized the importance of the role of the cognitive factors play in the language learning. There are many differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and cultural background between Chinese and English, which would make Tolerance of ambiguity is a cognitive style and also a reflection of learners' personality which refers to the attitudes that learners hold towards ambiguous, unfamiliar or uncertain situations in learning process, ranging from initiative reception to negative resistance,and it covers the students' listening, speaking, reading and writing, and the most important one is that it influences their learning proficiency.Based on the cognitive theory, the paper points out that language learning is a moving process from states of doubt and ambiguity to certainty and the tolerance of ambiguity is just the sign of language learning development.In the teaching process, learning strategies plays a very important role. If the learners can use the learning strategies properly, it could provide a great support for the learners. When the learners learn foreign language, the factors must be existed by sex, motivation, age, and intelligence and learning style. And these factors play a very important role in foreign language learning, however, TOA is the most important factor in it. Therefore, many researchers have put the importance and direction on these factors, and TOA put an influence on the effect of learners' learning from different aspects. And the research on the relationship between tolerance of ambiguity and English vocabulary learning strategies use is much rarer.Therefore, this thesis will begin to discuss the relationship between the tolerance of ambiguity and English vocabulary learning strategies use. Traditionally, we hold that vocabulary acquisition through extensive reading is one of the good choices for the ESL/EFL learners to enlarge their vocabulary. However, vocabulary learning is a complex process, because many factors may influence the outcome of it. Individual difference is one of these factors investigated by researchers.This paper would answer these questions as follows:(1) What is the relationship between ambiguity tolerance and vocabulary learning strategies?(2) What are the differences among the learners with different levels of tolerance of ambiguity when they are selecting vocabulary learning strategies?The study showed that learners' tolerance of ambiguity correlated with vocabulary learning strategies use. Using reading and vocabulary learning strategies, the learners who have HTOA scored much higher the moderate and low tolerance teams. There are lots of great differences between high and low tolerance team. When the learners who have HTOA met ambiguous situations or conditions, they want to choose the reading strategies and vocabulary learning strategies. And their achievement would be higher than the other two groups.With this goal, the present article attempts to explore whether or not a low degree of tolerance of ambiguity interferes with the selection of English vocabulary learning strategies and how a low degree of tolerance of ambiguity is related to students' English proficiency.
