Objective:To investigate the effects of different spectral compositions of light on ocular development in rhesus monkeys. Methods:Twelve rhesus monkeys about95days old were randomized into4group and were raised for12weeks under one of four illumination conditions:A. full spectrum lights (n=3), B. fluorescent lamps light (n=3), C. incandescent lamp light (n=3), D.420nm monochromatic light(purple light, n=3). The lighting conditions were set at equal quantum number. The monkeys were exposed to light for a period of12hours per day (8AM-8PM). All animals underwent refraction and biometric measurements at each of the six time-points (0,2,4,6,8,12weeks). Analysis of variance of repeated data was used to analyze outcomes. Both the intra-group difference and inter-group difference were defined as significant at P<0.05.Results:1)Compared with the other three groups, refraction of D group was more hyperopic on last measurement (1.44D/1.46D/1.54D vs2.21D, P<0.05) with a slower vitreous and axial length extension (Vitreous length:12.17mm vs12.45mm/12.51mm/12.48mm, P<0.01. Axial length:18.96mm vs19.13mm/19.19mm/19.30mm, P<0.05).2)There was no difference in refractive state and axial length among A, B, C group at each time-point (P>0.05).3)There was no difference in corneal radius of curvature, anterior-segment length and lens thickness between A, B, C, D group at each time-point (P>0.05).Conclusions:1)Short-wavelength monochromatic light can decelerate vitreous and axial length extension and slow down the emmetropization in rhesus monkeys.2) The effects of fluorescent, incandescent and full spectrum light on ocular development of monkey were not found in short time (12weeks).We need more observation about it.3) The spectrum insufficiency of purple light maybe cause the abnormality of signal contrast on color channels, which resulted in an ocular development changes.
