Objective:This experiment is studying the alteration of the general characteristics, the concentration of SCFAs in the large intestine contents, and EGF in colon and serum to reflect the function of Germinated Barley Foodstuff (GBF) which improving the concentration of SCFAs (acetic,propionic,butyric acid) and EGF that are protective substances of mucous membrane of colon, protecting intestinal mucosal barrier to treat ulcerative colitis. The study plays a part in developing food assistance therapy in clinical treatment of ulcerative colitis.Methods:40 SD male rats were randomly divided into Blank Group, Model Group, Control Group, GBF Group,In addition to the control group, the other three groups a free drink of 3% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) solution for 7 days in rat model of ulcerative colitis. UC model is completed, four groups of rats continued to consume a normal diet and water, and the GBF group of rats was given GBF Suspension 1 time/day by intragastric administration, the control group of rats was given SASP Suspension 1 time/day by intragastric administration. By observing the animals to understand the general characteristics of the general situation in intestine of rats and Gas Chromatography (GC)to determination of the total contents of SCFAs each group in the large bowel and the SCFAs content of the different components, analysis of colon tissue and serum EGF content were measured in each group with ELISA.Result:1. Compared with the other groups, the GBF group increased the average total content of SCFAs, and acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid than the total content of the three other three groups are statistically significant increase (P<0.01)..2. The GBF group's butyric acid content of SCFAs was significantly increased proportion compared with the other three groups are statistically significant (P<0.01)).3. Compared with the other groups, the GBF group can increase increase the rats colon tissue and serum EGF levels, and compared with model group, control group had statistically significant increase (P<0.01). 4. Compared with model group, control group, colon and no significant increase in serum EGF levels, no significant difference (P>0.05).Conclusion:GBF is rich in insoluble dietary fiber which into the large intestine after fermentation by intestinal bacteria to produce protective substances nutrition SCFAs, particularly butyrate, which could protect intestinal mucosal barrier to undamaged. And, through this study found that GBF can also increase the EGF content in the colonic tissue and serum of experimental rat which is colon mucosal repair factors. Therefore, GBF can contribute to UC rats colon repair, protect the intestinal mucosal barrier function, the treatment of ulcerative colitis play a role.
