Objective: To study and analyze the relationshipin between serum interleukin-18 (IL-18) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH).Methods : The level of IL-18 was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) in the patients with essential hypertension alone 30 patients(EH groups), 30 patients with left ventricular hypertrophy(EH-LVH groups), and 30 normal controls(healthy control groups). Results: Serum IL-18 level was significantly higher in EH group than in control groups(P<0.05), higher in EH-LVH group than in groups EH and control(P<0.05). IL-18 level was positively correlated with LVMI(r=0.715, P<0.01). There was significant difference in IL-18 and LVMI between hypertensive patients in 3 different degrees(P<0.05). IL-18 was positively correlated with SBP, DBP(P<0.01). Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that SBP, DBP, blood urea nitrogen, triglyceride, C-reactive protein, left ventricular mass index entered regression equation. Conclusions: IL-18 level in serum is closely associated with left ventricular hypertrophy. IL-18 may be involved in the occurrence of hypertension, development, and then affect the process of left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac function.
