Objective: To preliminary investigate the clinical feature of acute pancreatitis (AP) in Suzhou District. Methods: 978 cases with AP were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of SooChow University from January 2004 to December 2009. A retrospective case study to analyse the etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis features of those patients. Results: 978 cases of AP patients were included in this research. 821 had mild acute pancreatitis (MAP), 157 had severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). During the 6 years, the incidence of AP was increasing year by year. The main etiopathogenisis of AP was biliary tract disease. Hyperlipidemia ranked to NO.2. Idiopathic AP accounted for 10.02%. There were 37 cases of recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP), including 29 cases of disease dued to biliary tract disease. In 978 cases of AP, 821 cases of MAP were cured by medical treatment. In 157 cases of SAP, there were 131 cases with effective internal medicine combined treatment.113 patients were implemented enteral nutrition.27 cases were carried on Continuous positive airway pressure ventilatory support.9 cases were carried on Intubation ventilator support.9 cases were carried out Continuous veno-veonus hemodialysis.73 cases (within 72 hours of onset) were carried on Endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) or Endoscopic nasobiliary drainage(ENBD).26 patients who were not cured by conservative treatment were transferred to surgery. There were totally 19 cases of deaths (19/157cases). The mortality rate was 12.10%. 7 cases (36.84%) died of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS).6 cases (31.58%) died of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).3 cases (15.79%) died of acute renal failure (ARF).3 cases (15.79%) died of infection. Conclusion: The incidence of AP is rising in Suzhou District. Biliary tract disease, hyperlipidemia and idiopathic are common etiological factors. The major cause of RAP is biliary tract disease. Targeted to individual treatment and comprehensive medical based treatment is the strategy of AP, especially SAP.
