Objective: Observing expression of cathepsinB in lens epithelial cells with cataract with exfoliation syndrome and senile cataract by SP immunohistochemical method, to explore the relationship between cathepsinB and exfoliation syndrome.Methods: Application of SP immunohistochemical method, to detect expression of cathepsinB in lens epithelial cells from 15 cataracts with exfoliation syndrome and 15 senile cataracts . Both groups were excluded from the history of ocular trauma, cancer and diabetes.Results: The positive expression standard of cathepsinB is the yellow or brown stain in lens epithelial cells. CathepsinB in lens epithelial cells with cataract with exfoliation syndrome and senile cataract were expressed.Expression of cathepsinB in cataract with exfoliation syndrome and senile cataract were very different levels. In lens epithehal cells of cataract with exfoliation syndrome,the high positive expressions of cathepsinB were seven cases,the middle positive expressions of cathepsinB were five cases,the weakly positive expressions of cathepsinB were two cases. Negative expression of cathepsinB was one case.Expression of cathepsinB in lens epithelial cells with cataract with exfoliation syndrome scored (?χ±s) 5.87±2.45;In lens epithelial cells of senile cataract, the high positive expression of cathepsinB was one case,the middle positive expressions of cathepsinB were two cases,the weakly positive expressions of cathepsinB were seven cases. Negative expressions of cathepsinB were five cases.Expression of cathepsinB in lens epithelial cells with senile cataract scored (?χ±s) was 2.67±2.23. Expression of cathepsinB in cataract with exfoliation syndrome and senile cataract use wilcoxon rank test, P = 0.002 <0.01, it is significant difference between the two groups. Expression scores of CathepsinB in cataract with exfoliation syndrome and senile cataract use t test, P = 0.001 <0.01, it is significant difference between the two groups.Conclusion: The expression of cathepsinB may be related to the development of cataract with exfoliation syndrome as well as the originate of exfoliation substance.
