Midface retrusion, including congenital and acquired deformities deformity, is common disease in craniofacial surgery which seriously affect quality of life. Traditional treatment are mainly focus on improving facial appearance by craniofacial surgery, but little on the reconstruction of stomatognathic function. Doctors are pay little attention to the function of stomatognathic system. In recent years, with the distraction osteogenesis applied in clinical practice, the treatment of midface retrusion achieved better results of both appearance and function. Based on the systemstic review of the literature, there were 12 cases of severe deformity patients with midface retrusion in our department between 2004-2010 included in our study. Based on the surgery accroding to different surgical deformity, we use the skull and external devices system to correct midface retrusion through distraction osteogenesis, combined with orthodontic treatment which achieved a satisfactory therapeutic effect. Through the retrospective study, we investigate the application of external devices system on the treatment of serious midface retrusion in order to provide clinical data to the treatment of craniofacial deformities.
