Abstract/Summary:
Objective1.To investigate the life quality of impoverished terminal cancer patients.2.To evaluate the effect of domestic hospice with analgesia as the primary treatment on the life quality of impoverished terminal cancer patients and find out its disadvantage and propound fittest measures of improvement.3.To assess the role of volunteers in domestic hospice service, and provide some suggestions for its development.MethodsTotal of 265 eligible patients with terminal cancer were randomized into the intervention group (130 cases) and the control group (135 cases) according to whether they accepted domestic hospice service. All patients were impoverished terminal cancer and expected having more than one month survival time. They could not tolerant radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery, but were willing to accept the domestic hospice offered by the medical service providers and the volunteers, and also agree to be surveyed for the service evaluation. All of the subjects were evaluated for their life quality, pain intensity, and their attitude for life before receiving domestic hospice service. One month after the service, they were re-evaluated. The data were analyzed using with the software SPSS version 17.0. The effect of domestic hospice on life quality of the impoverished terminal cancer patients was assessed and the service quality offered by the volunteers was evaluated.Results1.The impoverished terminal cancer patient had poor life quality.2.The scores of life quality for control group before and after the domestic hospice service were 35.21±5.75, and 40.21±4.33 respectively. It is showed remarkable improvement of life quality after the intervention (.P<0.05).3.Volunteers played a significant role in domestic hospice service. There is no obvious difference (P>0.05) in improving their life quality between the intervention and control groups, but the subjects in intervention group showed much positive life attitude compared with the ones in control group (P<0.05).Conclusion1.The domestic hospice with analgesia as the primary treatment provides free medical service to the impoverished terminal cancer patients, which involves in medical service, nursing and psychological counseling, conforming to the moderm medicine pattern requirement of biological, psychology and society, and fits the basic need of the patients.2.Domestic hospice was a suitable medical service for the impoverished cancer patients, because the patients may obtain the treatment and nursing under family member's attendance, which not only enable to improve patient's life quality meet patient's psychological demand, but also keep with traditional Chinese culture.3.Volunteers could enhance the service effect of domestic hospice.
