Urbanization has caused problems like reduction of greenlands and recreational space. These problems can be effectivelyresolved by green street construction. Studies on urban greenareas seldom talks about urban green streets. As a result, itsconception, its characteristics and its evaluation system areall not clear. To solve these problems, through looking up inrelated documents, this paper puts forward the conception ofgreen streets and points out the contents of the conception.The contents include: green streets are located in areas whichare relatively highly urbanized; green streets have multiplesocial functions, such as transportation, recreation, ecology,history and humanity; the coverage of green streets is so highthat it creates a green space; green streets serve as secondarystreets or landscape streets in cities. This article discussesabout the classification of urban green streets in three aspects: objects for service, functions and street structures.The original purpose of urban green street construction isto solve the problem of lacking street landscape and badrecreational environment. Now, the most urgent problem lies inthe comprehensive evaluation of the landscape value of urbangreen streets. Based on related documents, this articleanalyzes the elements of green streets, including visualelement and indirect element.Combining documents, elements analysis and experts' advice,this article constructs a comprehensive evaluation system ofurban green streets from five aspects: green landscape; hardlandscape; historical and cultural/commercial landscape;structures and ecology.Taking the typical urban green streets in central Shanghaias its object, we investigate and take picture of each tree andeach street in terms of their appearances, plants, structures,ecological conditions and so on. After that, we do research ongreen streets based on these statistics.We altogether investigated 14 green streets, with a total length of 35.27km. The results show: 1. the main type of treesin Shanghai urban green streets is chinar and evergreen treestake up 17%; 2. Generally speaking, Shanghai urban greenstreets are in good condition, and in terms of landscape level,most of the streets are of Level 3 or above; 3. The analysison streets functions (cultural green streets, landscape greenstreets, commercial green streets and Multiway Boulevard)shows: historical and cultural green streets are better thanother streets in all kinds of aspects; among the rest three,in terms of landscape and ecology, landscape green streets arebetter; in addition, Multiway Boulevard are the worst comparedwith others and they are in need of improvement.Based on these statistics and results, this article willprovide some suggestions to improve urban green streets.
