With an increasing awareness of the energy conservation concept, the demand for power-saving products in household appliance market is steadily increasing. As the main drivers for household appliances, motors play a significant role in the performance of household appliances. However, most household appliances use single-phase induction motors which have several problems such as low efficiency and poor power factor. Improving the motors' performance is one of the most urgent problems currently in the field of household appliances.This paper analyses the current status and the future trend for household appliances' motors. To compare with the traditional system with single-phase induction motor and belted transmission, it proposes a better system with single-phase AC powered three-phase variable frequency PMSM. Firstly, as most household appliances use single-phase AC power supply(220V, 50Hz), this paper designs a three-phase variable frequency PMSM prototype which is power supplied by the three-phase alternating current got from the single-phase AC power after the rectification of inverter to drive the household appliances. Secondly, making the motor electromagnetic field simulation analysis in the performance of back emf,efficiency and power factor with Ansoft software to compare with the performance of the single-phase induction motor. Finally, through both load experiment and no load experiment between the three-phase variable frequency PMSM prototype and the single-phase induction motor prototype to obtain the different data in motor power, speed, torsion moment, etc, and to compare the performance of two motors' efficiency and power factor. Then it verifies the rationality of the prototype design as well as the feasibility and superiority of applying three-phase variable frequency PMSM to household appliances.Simulation and experimental result shows that compared to household appliances with single-phase induction motor, the performance of three-phase variable frequency PMSM is improved in both efficiency and power factor. And the three-phase variable frequency PMSM can improve the household motor performance and also an important significance in energy conservation.
