Our life has changed tremendously by the car, as one of the greatest inventions in the twentieth Century. However, science is a "double-edged sword" sometimes. Our life space is extending over years, but our resource and environment are becoming worse and worse at the same time, we begin to think about the future of our car. Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) inherits traditional technology, and also has potentials in energy-saving and environment-protecting, has become one hotspot all over the world. HEV can overcome not only traditional shortcomings but also electric vehicle's deficiencies. It will realize lower and lower fuel consumption and emission through good combination between power coupling device and control strategies. Its cost performance is also comparable with traditional vehicle. As a word, HEV is the most practical energy-saving and environment-protecting vehicle currently.One type of power coupling devices based on single row double planetary gear mechanism is studied in the paper. It can realize speed coupling and torque coupling. The HEV matched it will realize the best performance roundly, because it can allocate power between engine and motor efficiently according to real condition.It has much work to do in the paper. Firstly, the type of planetary gear is need selected and basic parameters should be designed based on functional requirement. Secondly, the efficiency of power coupling device and whole power system is all need studied, so efficiency mode of the system is established. Thirdly, the mode should be optimized by Sequential Quadratic Programming method (SQP), so the best power condition when achieves to the maximum efficiency is got. Fourthly, a new control strategy based on the efficiency optimize is proposed and checked with Cruise. Finally, the performance of power coupling device and control strategy is checked by test.The research here only provides some reference for designing the better power coupling device in the future.
