The infiltration gallery, one of the water intake structures, is a horizontal well with certain holes. In the high latitude cold regions in China, the aquifers under floodplains or near mountains are very shallow so that in winter the rivers sometimes are frozen from the surface to bottom, which makes it difficult to intake surface water in those areas so the domestic water or industry water demand have to depend on groundwater. By building infiltration galleries in those shallow aquifers, water can be collected by gravity which has avoided the difficulties using vertical wells. The infiltration gallery adjacent to river has significantly improved the reliability of available water supply.The water production rate is one of the key factors in evaluating infiltration gallery projects, the influencing factors of which have never been pointed out. Based on analyzing theoretical formula and real cases, the influencing factors of water collecting by infiltration gallery have been recognized and analyzed. After designing a physical model, experiments of water production rate have been done. The achievements of the research are as followed.(1)Based on the analysis between influencing factors and water production rate of 2 real cases which respectively are the Duobao Mountain Infiltration Gallery Project and the Sunwu County Infiltration Gallery Project, the influencing parameters are summarized by theoretical formulae. In addition, influencing factors of water production rate have been given which include 3 factors as followed:the characteristics of the adjacent river, characteristics of the aquifer and the characteristics of infiltration gallery itself.(2)Based on the influencing factors of water production rate, a sand cube model has been designed and made out. Using the cuboid sand model after its debugging test, the water movement of infiltration gallery adjacent to river has been simulated.(3)In addition, experiments under different water table and frozen layer have been done to simulate the water movement in different situations. After discussing results, the regular pattern of influences caused by water table and frozen layer have been summarized which indicates that the experiments are feasible.
