In china, power distribution network in coal mines are mostly non-directly grounding system, e.g. samall grounding system. For this case, when single grounding fault happens, only a small current change will flow through the power cable, which increases the complicity of fault location.Travelling-wave method is the most popular way in fault location, and single-end and double-end method are both belong to travelling-wave method. This method needs to know the wave velocity before locating the fault, which is not always feasible in practice. One experience value will be chosen instead of the real one, which will lead to the location error when the two values differ. In view of this case, one method is adopted to eliminate the effect of speed errors that is independent of wave velocity. Both software simulation and experiments show that this new method improves the precision of fault location for power cable. Power system electromagnetic transient simulation software ATP was used to simulate the cable's single phase ground fault underground mine, simulation results demonstrate its feasibility and correctness. The hardware for on-line fault location system is also designed.
