Horizontal axis wind turbine is the most widely used wind power installations. Flow characteristics research of airfoil external fluid field and pneumatic characteristics analysis are the most important steps of horizontal axis wind turbine blade design. In this paper, the NACA2412,NACA4412,NACA4415 and NACA4418 series airfoil which was widely used in wind power generation domain are numerical simulated by computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT 6.3.2. By means of Spalar-S.Allmaras turbulent flow computational model, pressure and velocity distribution of this series airfoil external flow field under different attack angle can be solved. Pneumatic characteristics rules with attack angle changes are summarized, as well as analyzing pneumatic characteristics affect by wind speed, airfoil thickness and airfoil sinuosity. On this basis, original airfoil improvement work and numerical simulation validation have been done. The results show that the improved airfoil can not only obtain higher lift drag ratio, but also can operate normally in greater angle range and has stronger suitability on large attack angle operating conditions.
