It is essential for the diesel locomotive to run with safety in sand and dust weather condition. It is therefore necessary to design intake air filters which will separate to sand and dust as efficiently as possible. The multi-cyclone axial filter is recommended as valid for the diesel locomotive. In order to promote the design efficiency and quality, the paper researched characteristics of multi-cyclone axial filters by numerical simulation method and experimental method, and provides reference for the research and development of new products.A brief introduction to the basic types and the research methods of air filters are given. Taking the multi-cyclone axial filter as the research object, structural design of the eight blades cyclone and the four blades cyclone are accomplished respectively. On the basis of determining numerical simulation method of cyclone filter, the flow fields of the cyclones are numerically simulated respectively by use of professional computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT. According to the structure sizes of cyclones, the experiment models of cyclones are made of organic glass, the flow resistance characteristics and the dust filtration efficiency of the cyclones have been studied experimentally in wind tunnel.In this paper, periodic boundary conditions are used in the flow field calculation in cyclone and multi-cyclone filter, and accurate results have been achieved. The adoption of appropriate periodic boundary conditions is advisable. Results of numerical simulation agree well with experiment results of resistance characteristic, which show that the numerical simulation methods on cyclone filter have certain the rationality and practicability. Even a typically swirl separator like cyclone will have a more accurate resistance characteristic given by standard k-e model. Performance compare of two type's cyclone shows that the cyclone with spiral blades is a good choice. The Research methods as adopted in this paper have better feasibility and validity, which make a good base for further performance optimization of filters.
