As an important measure of new product development, digestion and absorption of advanced technology, reverse engineering and rapid prototyping technology research have attached great importance to industry and academic circles. Integrated use of RE, CAD/CAM, RP and other advanced manufacturing technology, to improve the competitiveness of products in the market has important theoretical significance and economic value.This paper focused on the reverse engineering and rapid prototyping technology, and summed up the latest developments of reverse engineering and rapid prototyping technology research and application. The main methods of rapid prototyping has been introduced in details, for example, SLA, LOM, SLS, FDM, etc. and the application of various methods were discussed. Combined with the use of RE and FDM manufacturing technology, this paper discussed the key technologies of three-dimensional solid modeling of reverse engineering:data acquisition, data processing, three-dimensional solid modeling and the importance of technology in FDM.Because of studying FDM applied research, the three-dimensional solid modeling of rapid prototyping and reverse engineering techniques, the following conclusions have been reached:rapid mold manufacturing technology has some characteristics, simple method, a wide range of design process, short production cycle, high quality and ease of remote services...
