The light is a key component of EMUs in the head of the train. It displays different identification when the train operates under different lines and directions. At the present, 350km/h EMUs light grilles mainly depend on import with high prices in China. Therefore it is necessary to carry on the digestion and absorption to light grilles imported.As the EMUs light grille structure is combined of many complex surfaces, building a geometric model directly would be a major difficulty. Reverse Engineering Technology is adopted to make the EMUs light grille homemade design. In allusion to the characteristics of the large curvature of light grille's surface, irregular contours of structural features and Initial Graphics Exchange Specification(IGES) based model, authors proposed the model reconstruction method for light grilles. Using independent geometric module in Pro/E, firstly establish base planes based on IGES file, then duplicate light grille surface from IGES file to generate a set of intersection curves with the base planes and surface duplicated above as mixed guide curves. After that, curvature analysis technique is used for intersection curves precision analysis, and finally the 3D model is reconstructed by boundary blend. The original data imported can be removed from this model in order to support redesign of parts and their manufacturability analysis. Research results above offer an efficient innovation solution for surface curvature mutation and IGES based model.After building the three-dimensional model, the rapid prototyping technology is applied in 3-matic software to optimized and repaired the light grille STL file in order to solve the bad contours, back face, possible noise shells. RP Build software is used to slice grille lights in STL format, and plan process parameters as well.A reverse engineering and rapid prototyping integration technology is proposed to implement the 350km/h EMUs light grille model reconstruction and rapid manufacturing. The research results provide the theory and technical support for non-parametric complex parts model reconstruction and their rapid prototyping.
