With the automobile consumption soaring, an increasing number of engines have been stepping into the maintenance overhauls, even into the discarding period. However, a large number of junked engines and their components will put great pressure on the environment. Thus, more than an engine manufacture takes a positive and initiative measure to launch the remanufacturing, one of which is to detect the corrosion and rust of the engine efficiently. To some extent, it will relieve the mounting pressure on the maintenance.Among the non-destructive testing (short for NDT) techniques, ultrasonic phased array technology (short for PA) takes the most advantage of focusing dynamically, testing sophisticated-shape specimen with high resolution, visualizing the test results and so on. Nevertheless, there are some inconvenient aspects for PA testing system, such as parameters to be set are not a few, users need to have a training course and data cannot be exported dynamically. Those will affect the detection efficiency greatly. So it is with necessity to improve the current PA testing system. Based on the working principle of PA and special construction of engine cylinder body, an inspection scheme aimed at the defects of engine cylinder body is designed.On the basis of the current detection system, the detection system for engine cylinder body mainly consists of hardware and software parts. Among the hardware section, detection mode, type of the probe and scanning mode are designed and determined. Before designing the software section, a simulation for confirming the correct design of hardware part is carried out so that it can lay a solid foundation for the software part. In the software part that is realized through Microsoft Visual C++, focal laws of linear scan and focusing are calculated in detail on the basis of the characteristics of PA; the algorithms for acquisition of data, correction of sound distance and automatic detection of ultrasonic echoes are designed; the useful and important data can be exported into the local computer's disk and a friendly human-computer interface is provided so as to observe the detection results better.An aluminum cylinder specimen is taken as the initial and simple model of engine cylinder body, and some defects simulating corrosion and attrition are designed. The improved PA detection system is applied to the aluminum cylinder with defects, and the good detection results shows that the program designed is feasible.Finally, a brief summary about the detection system for engine cylinder body and experiments is made. The advantages and disadvantages of the detection system are evaluated objectively, and further improvements and key problems to be settled are put forward.
