With the advantages of automated response, self-adaptation, sensing, information converting, intelligent materials has changed civil engineers'thinking ways of the design of semi-active control system. In this thesis, a semi-active negative stiffness damper which is made of magnetostriction materials is presented, as well as its corresponding control algorithm and the examples of designing.The mechanism of action and the correlated characteristics of magnetostriction are introduced firstly. At the same time, the specific designing method of Magnetostriction driver is provided, including the size of GMM stick, the drive coil design, the permanent magnetic circuit design, the cooling system design, the design of pre-stress mechanism system and the frame design of magnetostriction driver. Then the Ansoft software is adapted to do numerical analysis of the driver magnetic circuit and the permanent mag-netic circuit, with which we can carry out the optimization adjustment of the theoretical design. At last, through the numerical analysis of the total magnetic circuit of the optimum designed magnetostriction driver, we can get the mechanical properties of the driver. Fur-thermore, a magnetostriction negative stiffness damper by using magnetostriction driver as the kernel component is designed. The realizing ways of negative stiffness are introduced as well.The examples of designing and the specific control algorithm of the magnetostriction negative stiffness damper are provided in this thesis. The analysis indicates that the design of the magnetostriction negative stiffness damper is doable, which can also be used as a reference of the practical application and the further theoretical research of the magne-tostriction negative stiffness damper.
