As an indispensable resource of national economic development and people's daily live, electricity has developed to be the measurement of state's development. As the basis for the development of power system stability, the security of power system has attract more attention. Power system protection devices play an important role to protect the stability and safety of power system, and the test equipment of it has made great progress in recent years.According to the relevant national standards and considering the needs of ourselves, we have developed a new protection test device. With embedded system and digital signal processing platform, the microcomputer-based relay protection test device has compact size, comprehensive testing capabilities, friendly user interface, easy to maintain and upgrade and could be easily used to test most relay protections in the market.The article begins with the importance of security and stability of power system, and discusses the history and current development of relay protection tester. Then introduce the research and development of microprocessor-based relay protection tester through the software part and hardware part. The framework includes the host computer and the lower computer together with the software system of communication.The design of oscillation and fault review module is mainly discussed in this paper, especially in the software part. The research on the oscillation module includes the principle of the system oscillation and the oscillation impact on power system. Depend on the simplified equivalent model of two-machine system, the electric signal change during oscillation is discussed, especially when fault occur. The module parameters, the test logic and rules are introduced in the fault review module. Based on COMTRADE format, the stored data are read by using VC, showed to the users and the waveform of fault data is reappeared.
