It is of great importance to maintain braking performance of a vehicle, especially for heavy-duty vehicles and others traveled in the mountain areas. Because of the widely used of drum brakes in their braking system, brake thermal recession is very likely to take place. In order to improve the brake performance and avoid the occurrence of thermal recession, finite element analysis model about drum brakes are established to analysis the thermal phenomenon in different conditions using finite element software ANSYS. Then the cooling device of drum brakes has been researched. At the end of this thesis, engineering measures were discussed to avoid the occurrence of thermal recession.In this thesis, heat generating and radiating mechanism about drum brakes during the braking process was analyzed according to thermodynamic theory. Also, the heat conducting differential equations were conducted and both the boundary conditions and brake convection coefficient were conformed. Subsequently, CATIA three-dimensional solid model and ANSYS finite element analysis model were established according to the basic principles of finite element analysis and modeling. In order to verify the accuracy of finite element analysis, the thermal analysis results was compared with the brake temperature experimental data.In order to research the influence of different factors on brake temperature representative conditions was selected to analyze the temperature field of drum brakes, The genetic algorithm optimization toolbox of MATLAB was used to optimize the structural parameters of the brake to reduce the brake temperature. This research can provide reference for the vehicle design, improvement and research At the end of the thesis, the existing drum brake cooling device has been studied, to conclude about the performance which the cooling device should have.Then the cooling zone of the cooling system was analyzed and the quantity of cooling water which used in cooling zone was calculated. What's more, the accuracy of cooling water quantity was verified with the ANSYS simulation. At last, the cooling water quantity which used in different water cooling devices was compared with. Also, other measures to prevent heat recession were introduced in this thesis as references for depth on other cooling device.
